The High-Flying Achievements of Arnold Palmer: From Golf to Aviation
“I’ll have that Arnold Palmer drink too,” the lady placed her order to the waiter after overhearing Arnold Palmer’s lunch order at the Augusta National Golf Club in the 1960s. This sentence became the catalyst for one of the most popular non-alcoholic drinks, a combination of lemonade and iced tea, in the United States.
Under the Arnold Palmer trademark, Arizona Beverage Company sells the drink which became one of their most popular flavors. The drink’s popularity surged so much that multiple brands have produced their renditions of the drink like Nestea, Lipton, and Snapple, as well as famous fast food chains such as Chick-fil-A and Raising Canes.
If people have heard of the name Arnold Palmer, it is most likely due to his exemplary career as a golfer in the 60s. Throughout his entire career as an athlete, he amassed 92 championships in professional competition or national or international stature, with most of them won from the U.S. PGA Tour.
In addition to golf, Mr. Arnold Palmer was truly a man of many talents. A more unknown fact about him is that he had an intense love for aviation and an accomplished career as a pilot. As a child, he loved to build balsa wood models and had dreams of learning to fly an airplane.
He began chasing his pilot dreams by taking flying lessons in a single-engine Cessna 172. In 1961, Palmer purchased his first aircraft, an Aero Commander 500, which allowed him to fly solo to his golf tournaments. On May 19, 1976, he set a world record by circumnavigating the globe in a Lear 36 in less than 58 hours. Throughout his life, Arnold logged over 18000 hours of flying.
To sum up his love for aviation, Palmer concludes with this: “To put it quite simply, I could never have accomplished even half as much as I have in my golf and business careers over the last four decades without having my own airplanes.”
