What Sustainability Means to Pacmin Studios
Sustainability. The ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time. It seeks to prevent the deletion of physical resources so they will be available long-term.
I found the definition above after Googling “sustainability”. The word has gained a lot of relevance in our current decade, especially in advocacy to fight the climate crisis.
At PacMin Studios, in our quest for sustainability, we have invested in solar energy generation and lean manufacturing technologies that drastically reduce waste. We utilize recyclable cardboard cartons to ship our models. We continue to search for a suitable substitute for the die-cut foam that cradles the finished product, exploring suitable solutions with our supplier partners.
One aspect of sustainability that rarely gets attention is endurance. Is a product built to last so that it provides utility over a long period of time? Or does it need to be replaced frequently?
I thought about this when visiting the Wings Over the Rockies Museum in Denver, Colorado and found a number of PacMin models. I saw a large 1/10 scale DC-8 model, a 1/15 scale Space Shuttle and several Titan launch vehicles. The DC-8 was made in the late 1950s and the others have endured three decades.
We were able to locate historical photos of the same models from our Pacmin archive, taken decades ago during their first public appearances. These models continue to edjucate and inspire for generations to come.
Does crafting a beautiful product together with our customers… one that serves a purpose for many, many years……constitute a contribution to “sustainability”?
