Is that Groucho with a PacMin Plane? You Bet your life!

As President of PacMin, Dan Ouweleen can’t help but feel great passion for aviation and its history. The interests of work tend to absorb into your everyday activities and your senses heighten when you note the overlap. You immediately spot model airplanes in print and television ads, pay closer attention to aviation related news stories and constantly find yourself trying to identify aircraft and their liveries when they pass overhead at 5,000 feet.

So, it’s not hard to see that a photograph such as this one of the legendary TV and film personality Groucho Marx (best known for his trademark cigar and game show You Bet Your life) would capture Dan’s attention when attending a recent conference at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Imagine his surprise and delight when, upon closer inspection, the photo revealed that this DC-7 was produced by none other than Pacific’ Miniatures.

After several phone calls and a good dash of luck we were thrilled to discover that this portrait was the work of renowned photographer Milton H. Greene. Throughout his lifetime, Greene amassed a portrait collection of over 300,000 elegant and intimate images of fashion, beauty, and entertainment icons of our bygone era including Gloria Vanderbilt, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe.

The American Airlines DC-7 cut-away model was manufactured in the 1950s at PacMin, then located in Alhambra, California. Marx and the detailed model, no doubt, were helping to promote the benefits of airline travel and the spaciousness that the DC-7 afforded.

Pacific Miniatures has been a preferred supplier to American Airlines since our beginnings in 1946, manufacturing a wide range of aircraft models used by American’s marketing department and their company stores.

As always, we at Pacific Miniatures are pleased to find our work not only an integral part of aviation history, but Hollywood’s as well!
