Project Description

Precision Castparts Corp. (PCC), a leading manufacturer of critical components for the aerospace industry, required a clear way to showcase their engine and structural parts at major trade shows. Pacmin Studios developed two primary physical assets: a 1/3 scale mockup of a generic airplane engine and a 1/8 scale aircraft midsection cutaway. To extend the reach of the exhibit, our partners at Blue Sky CGI worked alongside us to replicate these models in a clear, precise animation.

The Challenge

PCC manufactures complex internal components that are often hidden from view once an aircraft is fully assembled. The client needed a creative way to highlight these specific contributions in context with both clarity and speed. The challenge was to create high-fidelity models that prioritized component visibility over brand identity, allowing the viewer to instantly understand PCC’s product line. Furthermore, while physical models are powerful in-person tools, their size makes them difficult to transport globally, leaving a gap in the client’s digital marketing reach.

The Plan

Over a 12-week timeline, we developed a strategy to develop both physical and digital assets. We implemented a color-coded system where parts manufactured by PCC were finished in standout highlight colors, while all other structural components remained in a neutral, contrasting tone. To bridge the gap between the trade show floor and global outreach, we collaborated with Blue Sky CGI to create a matching animation that allowed for more in-depth views of the components that a physical model cannot provide.

The Process

Production involved building the 1/3 scale jet engine and 1.8 scale aircraft midsection from the ground up. We utilized generic designs for all non-PCC components to ensure the client’s specific parts remained the undisputed focal point. These highlighted components were meticulously engineered and produced for accuracy and finished in consistent colors to match the model’s color key. We developed custom, travel-ready display stands with integrated lighting for simple setup and installation on the show floor. Finally, Blue Sky CGI delivered a matching digital animation that could both play alongside the physical models and expand the project’s reach to audiences unable to view the physical models in person.

The Win

The integrated approach transformed the client’s presence resulting in a “Best in Show” award at the event where the models debuted. The installation allowed PCC to communicate their complex manufacturing contributions in seconds to any visitor, regardless of their engineering background. By providing both a physical centerpiece and a digital marketing asset, we gave PCC a way to demonstrate their expertise both in person and through high-impact digital follow-ups.
