Greenpoint Technologies approached Pacmin Studios to transform their Zen Garden-inspired interior concept for the Boeing 777X, which was originally developed as a digital design for a private aviation contest, into an uncompromising 1/20 scale cutaway model that could be transported for display at trade shows.

The Challenge

Greenpoint had developed intricate digital renderings featuring a wide variety of textures that now needed to be replicated in the physical dimension. Specifically, the design included a complex “Starscape” floor lighting system and custom organic elements, such as olive trees, that did not exist in the miniature market. The client was concerned that a physical model might lose the ethereal, luxury feel of the original designs as it was shrunk down to a small scale.

The Plan

We acted as a bridge between the digital design and physical manufacturing, redesigning every interior element in CAD to ensure they could be 3D printed with structural integrity. To maintain the client’s vision, we intentionally redesigned textures like wood grain so that the detail remained visible to the naked eye at 1/20 scale. We also collaborated on strategic compromises, such as using clear acrylic supports for overhead furniture to ensure the floor details remained visible from a cutaway perspective.

The Process

The 10-month build was a highly technical process focused on material representation. To achieve the “Starscape” effect, we hand-threaded over 1,000 fiber optic cables into the floor. Since the interior featured a variety of mirrored finishes, leathers, and fabrics, we used a combination of customized paints with specific sheens and a mixture of decal types to mimic the high-end materials. For the organic elements, our project manager hand-sculpted olive trees to ensure the “Zen” aesthetic was effectively conveyed down to the smallest details.

The Win

Greenpoint Technologies received a tangible representation of their digital concept that never compromised on their original intent. The model successfully debuted at global trade shows, perfectly matching the coordinated booth branding and now serves as a permanent centerpiece at the Greenpoint Technologies headquarters in Bothell, Washington.
