Project Description
Our longtime partner, Alaska Airlines, approached us with a vision for a sprawling permanent installation within their new, state-of-the-art training facility. Pacmin Studios designed and manufactured 14 customized aircraft models, ranging from a 1/20 scale Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker (just 16.8 inches long) to a massive 1/8 scale Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner spanning over 25 feet. Permanently suspended from the atrium ceiling, the models would serve as an inspirational tribute to the rich history and evolution of Alaska Airlines.
The Challenge
Alaska Airlines envisioned a visual timeline comprised of a fleet of aircraft suspended in flight that would tell the story of the airline’s rich heritage. Beyond the massive scale of the project, we had to navigate the complexities of a predetermined architectural space and unyielding technical requirements.
The models had to be accurate, perfectly scaled for the atrium, and engineered with structural integrity to meet strict building and safety codes. With so many complex factors at play, Alaska was anxious that the vision might not be possible to execute in time for the facility’s opening.
The Plan
Over several months, we partnered with Alaska Airlines and the facility’s architects to develop a structured roadmap. We curated a selection of 14 aircraft that represented the most pivotal moments in the history of Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines.
13 models would be designed and produced in 1/20 scale, forming a half circle around the much larger 787-9 centerpiece featuring the airline’s brand new livery. Recognizing that the client lacked on-site storage during construction, we would house the completed fleet until the training center was ready, at which point we would coordinate a company-wide effort to deliver and install all 14 models safely.
The Process
With the blueprint finalized, we had a narrow 10-month window to bring 14 unique aircraft models into existence. We mobilized our entire facility, prioritizing models where we already held existing CAD data and artwork.
Simultaneously, a specialized team began resurrecting the rarer, historical models. By combing through archival records and historical photographs, our team was able to reconstruct liveries and designs that had been lost to time. Our fabricators used a blend of 3D printing, custom molding, and hand-finishing to bring the designs to life. When production had been completed, we arranged for a synchronized delivery of the models while Pacmin Studios team members met at the site to assist and advise the crew performing the final installation.
The Win
What started as a mere idea fueled by the fear of an impossible deadline was transformed into an awe-inspiring physical reality. By creating a permanent visual record of their evolution, Alaska Airlines gained a powerful tool for internal culture-building that serves as a daily reminder of their legacy.
Today, the installation continues to serve as a impactful greeting to everyone who visits the facility, educating them on the airline’s identity as a world-class and still-evolving entity.
“The Alaska Airlines project team had the opportunity to work closely with Pacmin Studios on two defining elements that helped bring our new Global Training Center in Renton, WA to life.

Their team worked around the clock, including through the holidays, to ensure the model was completed and delivered in time for our grand opening without compromising quality.
